Mr. Arnold, who suffered from congestive heart failure, died Sunday at his home in Rocky River. He was 81.
He was born in Cleveland and graduated from Cathedral Latin School and OSU, where he majored in business administration, education and arts and science.
He later graduated from Capital University's law school in Columbus.
He was the first director of the annual Knights of Columbus track meet here. In February, on the meet's 50th anniversary, he was awarded a plaque for having been instrumental in its success and longevity.
Mr. Arnold served as the past grand knight of Knights of Columbus Council 400 in Columbus.
From 1936 to 1942, when he entered the Army, he taught history and geography to students at East High School.
During World War II, he served the Army as a lieutenant colonel based at Fort Benning in Georgia from 1942 to 1946.
He later joined General Electric Co.'s communications division at Nela Park, retiring as district sales manager after 25 years in 1977.
In addition to his interest in track-and-field events, he enjoyed Dixieland music, gardening, current affairs, politics and all OSU sports.
He is survived by daughter, Sheila M. Klausman of Columbia, S.C.; sons, George J. of Columbus, James J. of Reno, Nev., Joseph F. of Seattle, Wash., Terrence F. of Columbus and Kevin T. of Fairview Park; and five grandchildren.**
