Little is known about Donnelly except he had been mining in the vicinity above Yankee Hill, where he met his death, for the previous three or four months. His body was horribly crushed and mangled, found buried under a pile of rock and dirt with just his hand protruding. It was plainly evident he had been caught by a cave. After Donnelly was absent for a week he was discovered by his neighbor who went looking for him at the claim in which he had been working. Peering down the shaft the neighbor saw just Donnelly's hand. Justice J.W. Pitts of Columbia was notified.
