He was born in Winston-Salem, N.C., on March 13, 1923, to John Wofford Tatum and Garnett Stovall Tatum. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers, Richard E. Tatum, Thomas P. Tatum, Robert H. Tatum, Abram C . Tatum and E. Kerr Tatum; and one sister, Garnett Lee Tatum.
He was a self-employed machinist, served in the Army and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are a sister, Nancy T. Washburn of Forest; two brothers, William W. Tatum of Ridgeway and David M. Tatum of Martinsville; 19 nieces and nephews; and 21 great-nieces and -nephews.
