David Moore Tatum
July 26, 1931 - May 11, 2018
David Moore Tatum, 86, died Friday in Martinsville. The seventh son of John Wofford Tatum and Garnett Stovall Tatum, David, a graduate of Ridgeway High School, was preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings.

After a brief stint in the US Air Force in the 1950s, he worked as a mechanic at Cody's Garage before joining DuPont, serving on the plant's fire brigade. Rumors of his occasional employment as a small-batch artisanal distiller and distributor cannot be confirmed.

David loved music and played banjo in several local bluegrass bands. He also was an avid baseball fan, with his favorite team being whoever was playing against the Yankees on any given day.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Martin Tatum of the home; two daughters, Melanie Garnett Tatum of Brooklyn, New York and Heather Tatum Schena and husband Eric Schena of Winchester, Virginia; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

No funeral will be held, as David frowned on the rigamarole and expense of such things. However, plans for a celebration of his life may be announced at a later date. Chocolate cake, peach pie, stories of David's exploits, and small-batch artisanal distilled products will of course be welcome.

David had a great fondness for animals, especially cats. As such, in lieu of flowers, please send donations in David's name to the Martinsville-Henry County SPCA (online at http://www.spcamhc.org/form/donate).

Norris Funeral Services, Inc. and Crematory of Martinsville, VA is serving the Tatum family. Online condolences may be made at www.norrisfuneral.com.
