WINTERS

Luella M. Winters was born Oct. 20, 1920 on a farm near Rolfe, Iowa. She was the daughter of John R. and Caroline Joens Maassen. She was confirmed at the St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Pocahontas on April 14, 1935.

She was united in marriage on May 14, 1943, to James W. Winters and to this union four children were born. They are Jolene Winters, Paulette Briggs, Larry Winters and Jerry Winters.

Luella was preceded in death by her parents, John and Caroline Maassen; her husband, James; and two brothers, Kenneth and Donald Maassen.

She is survived by her two daughters, Jolene Winters, Paulette Briggs and husband Roy Briggs, Jr., all of Des Moines; two sons, Jerry Winters and wife Carol, of Cedar Rapids, and Larry Winters of Des Moines; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alfred Maassen of Rolfe and Junior Maassen of Williamson; one sister, Viola Maass of Manson; plus many nieces and nephews.

She departed this life Nov. 23, 1991 at the age of 71 years, one month and three days. She had been a patient at Mercy Hospital for the past 31 days due to a heart ailment.

Luella enjoyed playing cards, shopping and going out to eat with her daughters, latch hook, quilting and being with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by all.

Services were held Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 1:30 p.m. at the Fielding Funeral Home with the Rev. Lou Hoger officiating. Burial was in the Chariton Cemetery. Pallbearers were Jeffery Briggs, Todd Briggs, Randy Grove, Justin Grove, Jason Winters, Lamont Convery and Scott Winters.
