JOHN BRUBAKER DIED AT HOME AT FRUITVALE

96-Year-Old Civil War Veteran Had Made His Home Here for 12 Years

John A. Brubaker, resident of the Fruitvale district for 12 years, died last night at 7 o'clock at his home just south of the Fruitvale store. Mr. Brubaker was past 96 years of age and was a veteran of the Civil war. Born in Lincoln Co., Ohio, on August 25, 1837[sic], Mr. Brubaker was 96 years, 7 months and 14 years[sic] of age. He enlisted August 25, 1862 in Co. F 19th Iowa Infantry as private. He was discharged in March 1863 as private in the same company at St. Louis. Mr. Brubaker was discharged because of three wounds in the hip, side and arm, received in active combat at Prairie Grove, Arkansas. Mr. Brubaker engaged in banking in Missouri and later retired. After his retirement he resided on a farm and engaged in farming the remainder of his life. Twelve years ago the family moved here from their farm in Missouri. Surviving Mr. Brubaker are his widow, who resides at Fruitvale, two sons E. T.[sic] Brubaker of Illinois and Cash Brubaker of Fort Collins, a daughter, Mrs. R. C. Jones of Nevada, Missouri and other relatives. For 66 years Mr. Brubaker was a member of the Masonic lodge. He joined first in Illinois, a member of A. F. & A. M. No. 5 in 1868 and later transferred to the lodge at Logan, Kansas No. 189. He was also a member of the Odd Fellows lodge. In past years he had taken an active part in both orders. The remains are at the Martin funeral home. No arrangements for services will be made until answers are received to telegrams sent to his children.
