Merrill Hill, 89, was born and raised in Payson, Utah. As a young man, after WWII and the Marine Corps, he pursued his education at the University of Utah, and soon became the state Director of Mathematics Education. In his mid-thirties he moved to Chicago, married Lorraine Loy and enjoyed a long career with Scott Foresman Publishing Co. developing and editing textbooks for all grade levels of public schools in the subjects of mathematics, history, biology, and life sciences. Merrill retired to Hot Springs Village where he golfed regularly, and also became a master gardener, sometimes drawing interested people from great distances to see his gardens. He was known for his positive optimism and upbeat personality, and he will be missed by many friends. Merrill and Lorraine were a devoted and loving couple, and she preceded him in passing by 5 years.

Merrill is survived by one son, Barry Hill, and one granddaughter, Jessica Hill, both of them residing in California, and two step sons, John Loy and Brent Loy and their wives and children.

His family has no memorial service planned at this time.
