She attended Caldwell public schools and upon graduation from Freeman High School, she married her childhood sweetheart in 1954, Milton R. Carroll. She attended Cameron College in Killeen, where she received an Associates Degree in Business. Jewel and Milton started their life together in the military. Milton was stationed in various places including, Germany, Oklahoma, and Missouri until 1972, when they settled in Killeen. During that time, Jewel accompanied Milton, and took care of a beautiful young family of four, Roy, Gwen, Jackie and Janice.

In Killeen, Jewel stayed busy as co-owner of Carroll Rental and T.V. Repair for 12 years. Her warm smile and reassuring voice would always strike a friendly note with the public and with children. For many years, she worked with children in Vacation Bible School and with children of early childhood age. She served faithfully as a Stewardess for more than 20 years volunteering, visiting the sick, sharing communion and singing for the Lord.
