Jewel L. Manuel Carroll, 74, of Waco, formerly of Killeen, passed away Sunday, May 29, 2011, at her residence in Waco. Funeral services will be 12 noon Saturday, June 4, at Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen with the Rev. Walter McDonald and the Rev. George Johnson Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Killeen Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to service, 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Greater Peace MBC in Killeen.

Jewel Lene was born in Caldwell, Texas, to the late Ulysses and Ozie Manuel. Jewel, the fourth of seven children, enjoyed crossword puzzles, singing, sewing and cooking for her family as a young girl. She was baptized in 1948 at the age of twelve. She attended Caldwell public schools and upon graduation from Freeman High School, she married her childhood sweetheart in 1954, Milton R. Carroll. She attended Cameron College in Killeen, where she received an Associates Degree in Business. Jewel and Milton started their life together in the military. Milton was stationed in various places including, Germany, Oklahoma, and Missouri until 1972, when they settled in Killeen. During that time, Jewel accompanied Milton, and took care of a beautiful young family of four, Roy, Gwen, Jackie and Janice.

In Killeen, Jewel stayed busy as co-owner of Carroll Rental and T.V. Repair for 12 years. Her warm smile and reassuring voice would always strike a friendly note with the public and with children. For many years, she worked with children in Vacation Bible School and with children of early childhood age. She was a teacher's assistant at Haynes and Hay Branch Elementary Schools of the Killeen ISD for more than 10 years, lovingly working with children who had special needs. She had a passion for gardening, and after retirement she spend many hours doing so and sharing the products of her labor with her neighbors. She raised her four children, who all became college graduates and members of the church.

Jewel Carroll was a member of Anderson Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Killeen. She served faithfully as a Stewardess for more than 20 years volunteering, visiting the sick, sharing communion and singing for the Lord. She was also a member of Greater Peace Missionary Baptist Church in Killeen until 2006 when the family relocated to Waco, where Jewell was presently a member of St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Jewel was preceded in death by her son, Roy Carroll; a sister, Irene Lockhart; and brothers, Edward and J.D. Manuel.

She is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Milton R. Carroll; sisters, Bobbie Manuel and Hester Richardson, both of Dallas, Rose Johnson and husband, Willie, of Cuero; daughters, Gwendlyn J. Jackson and husband, Gregory, Jacqueline L. Gains and husband, Darvis, and Janice E. Carroll, all of Waco; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; step-daughter, Emma P. Tyrone and husband, George, of Houston; a daughter-in-law, Amy Carroll of League City; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
