Born about 1833 near Leesburg, Southampton Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania; eldest son of Harmon Hillsberry. With his father and siblings, William moved in 1853 to East Bend Township, Champaign County, Illinois, where his father purchased land in 1853 and 1855. He was enumerated in the 1860 census as a farm laborer on his father's farm, age 26. He was the administrator of his father's estate in early 1862, and inherited a share of the farm.

William Hillsberry enlisted as a private on 1 August 1862 and on 22 August was mustered into Company B, 76th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment for three years of service. (According to his enlistment papers, he was a farmer, 29 years old; 5 feet, 9 inches tall; and had sandy hair, blue eyes, and a light complexion.) William died of disease on 5 March 1863 in Washington Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, and was buried probably in Memphis National Cemetery.

William Hillsbury never married. His mother's identity remains unknown.
