William Hillsberry enlisted as a private on 1 August 1862 and on 22 August was mustered into Company B, 76th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment for three years of service. (According to his enlistment papers, he was a farmer, 29 years old; 5 feet, 9 inches tall; and had sandy hair, blue eyes, and a light complexion.) William died of disease on 5 March 1863 in Washington Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee, and was buried probably in Memphis National Cemetery.
