Lifelong Kendall County resident, Joyce Smith McGuffin, passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at the age of 90. Joyce was born to Claude and Ivy Lee (Smith) Smith on July 4, 1929. She attended school in Kendalia.

She married the love of her life, James Luther “Luke” McGuffin on November 30, 1947. They were blessed with two sons. Joyce loved taking care of her family and spent the remainder of her life enjoying them. She was a wonderful cook and always welcomed people into her home. Joyce also loved quilting, porcelain painting, gardening, and her pet raccoon, Rascal, whom she raised from a baby. The entire family loved hunting in Colorado and she would make every trip.

Joyce loved to bowl and was a lifetime member of the Boerne Turn Verein. Her father played the fiddle and she always wanted to learn to play and did so later in life. She also used her fiddling talents at the nursing home. Joyce was always ready and willing to help anyone that needed it. She volunteered with the development of the Rainbow Center on San Antonio Street. She attended the First Baptist Church and always had a strong faith. Joyce’s faith was tested many times over the years beginning with a diagnosis of colon cancer which was followed by her husband having a stroke. She was his sole caregiver for five years until he passed away. A second round of cancer developed and through it all, she kept her faith.

Joyce is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years; and four brothers baby Lynn, T.W. Smith (Minnie), Pat Avery Smith (Margaret) and Eugene Smith (Genie).

She is survived by her two sons, Jerry and wife Gertrude (Rust) McGuffin and Luther McGuffin. She is also survived by a sister, Nelda Culak (Eugene), and a brother, L.C. Smith (Sharon).

The family would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to the staff of Cibolo Creek Nursing Home for their love and support provided for the past two years.

A Visitation will be held on Sunday, May 17, 2020, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Ebensberger-Fisher Funeral Home. The Graveside service will be held the following day, Monday, May 18, 2020, at 10:00 a.m. at Smith Cemetery.
