CIC veteran of WW2, Korea, Vietnam and Cold War.Richard B. Snyder, 89, a former Springwater resident, passed away at Tampa General Hospital near his home at Sun City Center, Florida.

Dick was born Oct. 18, 1921, in Springwater, the son of Waldo and Mildred (Babcock) Snyder.

Dick married Mabel Irene Leitch in 1942 and together celebrated more than 52 years of marriage, prior to Mabel passing away in 1994.

Dick served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, Korean Conflict and Vietnam War, retiring with the rank of colonel.

Dick was commissioned an infantry officer upon graduation from Officer Candidate School in 1945. His first duty assignment was as Platoon Leader, Company E, 193rd Battalion, 60th Infantry Training Regiment, Camp Blending, Fla. Dick's first overseas assignment was with the Military Police Battalion in Munich, Germany, as a special investigations officer in 1946.

He was recruited by the Counter Intelligence Corp. in 1947 and served in military intelligence until his retirement in September 1971.

He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his service.

Upon his retirement, Dick remained very active in veterans affairs. He was an active member of the Disable American Veterans and was given a certificate of appreciation for his effort and leadership in establishing transportation for the veterans of South Hillsborough County.

Dick was also a founding member and organizer of Army Counter Intelligence Corps Veterans and especially enjoyed his work with the Agent Report and organizing annual events.

He was proud to be an Eagle Scout and a life member of the National Eagle Scout Association.

Dick was a very important benefactor of the Springwater, NY American Legion Kern-Robinson Post 905 and was a Gold Life Member of the post. He was also a member of the Springwater United Methodist Church. He thoroughly enjoyed the history of the Springwater area and had a tremendous memory for the people that he grew up with. Regardless of the miles between Florida and Springwater he always stayed in touch and did what he could.

Dick was predeceased by his wife, Mabel Snyder. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, George and Connie Snyder of Wexford, Pa.; two grandchildren, Michael and Jennifer; and his fiancee, Thora Allen of Sun City, Fla.

Col. Richard B. Snyder's family and friends called from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland. A chaplain service was provided by the Kern-Robinson Post 905 at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Dick's funeral service was at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Springwater United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jerry Metz officiating. Interment, committal prayers and military honors will take place immediately following at Mt. Vernon Evergreen Cemetery in Springwater. Memorial contributions in his memory may be made to the Kern-Robinson Post 905, P.O. Box 100, Springwater, NY, 14560."
