Lena Carter Carroll Anderson died peacefully on August 30, 2002 at Bug Hill Farm in Independence, Texas surrounded by her family. She was born in Houston, Texas on October 16, 1911 to Lena Lister Carter Carroll and James Judson Carroll. Lena was a lifelong resident of Houston. She attended the Kinkaid School in Houston and the Hockaday School in Dallas.

On May 30, 1930, she married Dillon Anderson. Lena and Dillon had three daughters, Susu, Jill, and Betsey. As a child Lena spent summers with her family in Camden, Texas. In 1951, Lena and Dillon bought a farm in Independence where they enjoyed time in the country with family and friends. During World War II, and when her husband served in the Eisenhower administration, Lena lived with her husband and children in Washington, D.C. Lena was a member of The Junior League of Houston, the Houston Country Club, and the Bayou Club. She was a member and past president of The Assembly. A loving and caring person, Lena was devoted to her family, and especially enjoyed gatherings in the country where four generations were represented. The most recent was an Anderson Family Reunion in Independence on June 16, 2002. Her family cherished her.

Lena was predeceased by her husband, Dillon Anderson in 1974, by her father in 1938, by her mother in 1971, and by her two sisters, Frankie Maude Carroll Bullington and Mary Carroll Kempner Reed.

She is survived by three daughters and their husbands, Susan Anderson Whiteford and Charles A. Whiteford, Jr. of Independence, Jill Anderson Kyle and Jerry V. Kyle of Independence, and Elizabeth Anderson Martin and Ronald E. Martin of Independence and Houston. She had eight grandchildren, Carroll Whiteford Ruppert and husband, Richard W. Ruppert, Susan Whiteford Hugo and husband, George W. Hugo, Charles A. Whiteford III and wife, Laura Beth Whiteford, Jerry V. Kyle, Jr. and wife, Sandra Smith Kyle, Bonner Anderson Kyle Evarts and her husband, C. Mark Evarts, Dillon Anderson Kyle, Holly Martin Boyd and husband, Lee Boyd, and Catherine Anderson Martin; and seventeen great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express their appreciation to caregivers Barbarba Smith, Vanessa Ubani, and Mercedes Flores for their loyalty and understanding.

A graveside service for family members will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2002, at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston. The service will be officiated by The Reverend Cecilia S. Smith of Saint Peter's Episcopal Church in Brenham, Texas and the Reverend Dr. Peter G. Thomas of Saint Martin's Episcopal Church in Houston, Texas. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice Brenham, 705 South Austin, Brenham, Texas 77833 or to The Junior League of Houston, 1811 Briar Oaks, Houston, Texas 77027.
