Mother of James Thomas Lyon, Anne Maitland Lyon Meachum, Jennie McRae Lyon Shingler, Myrtle Lee Lyon, and Mary Louise Lyon.
Lilly was born in Williamson, Richmond County, which is now part of Scotland County NC. She was the tenth of 13 children.
Shortly after the June 1900 US Federal Census, she married Edward who was living in the Wolf Pit district of Richmond County and working as a clerk/salesperson. Both were single and living in their widowed mothers' households in June 1900.
By 1910, Edward and Lilly had moved to Lumber Bridge in nearby Robeson County. In 1915 they were living in Antioch, Hoke County (a portion of Robeson County until 1911).
Tragedy struck three times between 1912 and 1917. First, 2-year old Myrtle Lee died in 1912; then, 11-month old Mary Louise in 1916, followed by Lilly in 1917. She died of pulmonary tuberculosis.
Afterwards, the three remaining children went to live with Lilly's extended family. Husband Edward moved to Laurinburg in Scotland County to work in the cotton mills. Daughter Annie lived with her uncle, Robert H. Gibson, and his wife, Mary McLeod, in Ellerbe, Richmond County. Jennie lived with another uncle, Jeptha Dargan Gibson, and his wife, Catherine Estelle Manning, in Shannon, Hoke (formerly Robeson) County. Robert and Jeptha were brothers of Lilly.
By 1930, both Thomas and Annie had married and were living in Wadesboro, Anson County. Sister Jennie was working in nearby Marks Creek, Richmond County, where she met her future husband. Both sisters and Thomas' wife were graduates of Anson Sanitorium Training School for Nurses and worked as Registered Nurses.
Thomas eventually relocated to Guilford County and Jennie to South Carolina. Annie remained in Wadesboro. Their father never remarried. He lived for some years in his daughter Annie's home. His final years were with son Thomas' family in Guilford County.
