Life Story of Mrs. Dena Slykhuis

Dena Slykhuis, daughter of John and Gertrude Walters Marks was born in the Galesburg community, Jasper County, Oct. 10, 1873, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Gerrit De Zwarte, in Pella; Aug. 29. She had attained the age of 84 years.

On Oct. 19, 1894, she was united in marriage to Johan Slykhuis, at Galesburg. The couple farmed near Red Rock and later moved to a farm near Coalport, where they left the farm in 1938 and moved to Pella. Born to this union were five children, Jessie who died in 1938, (Gertrude) Mrs. Gerrit De Zwarte of Pella; (Reka) Mrs. Martsaluis Goemaat of Attica; Jeanette passing in her infancy; and Martin H. of Knoxville.

Survivors are her three children, one brother, John Marks of Oskaloosa, 14 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Johan in 1941; two daughters; one sister and two brothers.

Prayer Services were conducted at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home, prior to the Memorial Services held Sept. 1. The Rev. Wilbur Ringnalda officiating.

Interment was made in the T'Dam Cemetery south of Pella.
