Lemuel was 1 of 9 children born to William H. Oakes & his wife, Elizabeth (Elliot).

Lemmuel married Elizabeth Jane (maiden ?) in about 1804 in Pittsylvania Co.
Their 6 children:
1) Thomas Wilson, b. 2/14/1814; wife Harriet Newell (Everidge); 11 children; Thomas was founder of the "Red Oakes" branch, he married into the Choctaw tribe; see his biography on page #21286815

Joel Estes was appointed guardian of the orphans of Lemuel Oakes in a June, 1819, Pittsylvania Co. court session. Later, in a March 17, 1823, court session, Robert A. McCuiston was appointed guardian of Lemuel's children.
