His tombstone had Wm S but it should be Wm. Mitchell Lonzo Stephens.
One of his grandson's William Lonzo (Bill) Mcclure was named after him. He is my great grandfather, and father to my grandfather William Melvin Stephens. He was born in Talapoosa, Alabama and he came from Alabama to East Texas where he married my great grandmother Willie Texana Vardeman in Nacogdoches, Texas. Their marriage license is recorded in the Court House in Nacogdoches.

Quinton Stephens is my great, great grandfather too! I do know quite a lot about him. I have been researching my family tree for years. I wonder how many words I can type out in this box. I got my information from US census reports, public records, church records, birth certificates, death certificates, marriage records, newspapers, etc. Quinton David Stephens was born in 1825 in Tennessee. His father's name was Thomas Stephens. When Quinton was 22 he travelled south to Alabama where he met Mary Ann Elizabeth Scroggins and they were married on September 19, 1847, in Tallapoosa County, Alabama. One of their children, my great grandfather, Joseph S. Stephens, was born in 1857 in Nacogdoches County, Texas. He was the father of my grandmother, Laura Cordelia Stephens. Quinton and his family had their first child, James, in Alabama in 1853. In 1860, Quinton was granted a "Donation" of land from the state of Texas on July 24, 1860, for 80 acres of land. This information was taken from the "Nacogdoches County Abstract of all original Texas Land Titles" in the Lubbock County Library. The Texas Land Office verifies this land was purchased for $.50 per acre and was located in northeast Nacogdoches County. Quinton and Mary Ann had twins named Joseph and Acra, also James, William, Artimese, Melvin and Sarah, 7 known children. It appears the Stephens Family moved to Nacogdoches County circa 1860. The Texas Comanche wars were between 1820-1875. I could not find records of the death for Quinton, his wife, Mary Ann, Acra, Sarah. Possibly they were murdered by Indians. Five known children survived to adulthood. According to US Federal census of 1870, Melvin Stephens moved in with his uncle James Grisson Scroggins, at the age of 10. James moved in with his grandfather, Phillip Scroggins (aged 70 at the time) and his aunts and uncles, when he was 17. Both staying in Nacogdoches County, Texas. Artimese was married and died in 1937 in Nacogdoches County. Joseph S. Scroggins married Laura (Louisa) Phrozenia Bazemore on August 16, 1878, in Wills Point, Texas. They had 12 children in 21 years. He died on September 29, 1925, in Haskell, Texas, at the age of 68, and was buried there. Joseph Scroggins Stephens is my direct decendant. Robert, Linda and Catherine Duncan, children of Kirby Duncan, son of Laura Cordelia Stephens-daughter of Quinton Stephens. I'm so happy you wrote to me. Please let me know if you find anything else out.

P S *** After all the research that I have done---I now believe William Mitchell (Lonzo) Stephens was really named William Scroggins Stephens. Have never found it acknowledged, but all his brothers Joseph S, Melvin S, James S, all had an S for middle name. On Great Grandpa Williams tombstone , it is also Wm S Stephens. Believe the S stands for Scroggins after Mary Ann Elizabeth Scroggings Stephens family. He was called Bill, I can remember my grandpa Melvin saying.
