James joined the Army Air Corp in 1945, later joining the Air Force when that branch of the armed forces was created. During his tour of duty as a paratrooper at Fort Campbell, KY, he met and married Mary Evelyn Ezell. After he had sustained a fractured tail bone following a parachute jump, he change to mechanic rate while serving in Korea and later changed to chef. James retired from the Air Force as a Staff Sargeant. He served in the Korean War and Vietnam Nam. His last duty station was Travis Air Force Base, CA.He died after suffering a heart attack in Paintsville, KY on March 3, 1980. Military Funeral rendered by the VFW with full rites was held the evening of March 6, 1980. An additional service was held the following morning on March 7, 1980 prior to cremation. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ruth Price Gamboe, 2 sisters, Barbara Ann Gamboe and Betsy Ann Gamboe. Those left to mourn his loss: his father, James Floyd Gamboe, Paintsville, KY, sister, Mary Sue Gamboe Eckels,Pinellas Park, FL, 3 brothers, Billy Ray Gamboe, St. Petersberg, FL, Edward Price Gamboe, Paintsville, KY, and Gene David Gamboe, Paintsville, KY, 3 sons, James Edward Gamboe, San Deigo, CA, David Russell Gamboe, Hopkinsville, KY, John Wayne Gamboe, California, 2 daughters, Mary Joyce Gamboe Decker, Camino, CA, Barbara Ann Gamboe Ringgenberg, Virginia Beach, VA and 8 grandchildren.
