Leonard Kimball was an early settler of the Salt Point Township in Sonoma County. It seems that he left his entire family behind in Illinois in pursuit of this endeavor. He lived on a 160 acre parcel south of the Wheatfield Fork of the Gualala River, on a particularly hilly part of the country known as Sugarloaf Hill. He was registered as a farmer, and remnant fruit trees still stand on his lands. Records indicate that for a brief time he returned to Naperville to be with his family, but returned alone again.

In 1890, Kimball transferred his ranch holdings to his daughter, Emma Jane Curry, for $1. He died soon thereafter, and rather than being returned to his wife's side in Indiana, was buried on a mountaintop on his homestead in the Salt Point township.
