He was a farmer who came to LaPorte County about 1850 with his wife, Rhoda Tripp, and 10 children. He enlisted in the 128th Infantry, Indiana Volunteers on December 15, 1863. Discharged for disability in Columbia, Tenn 12-4-1864. War Dept #282341. Married Marian Baldwin in 1865.

Ten children: Huldah C Brink, Giles W. (151th Infantry in Civil War), Daniel B (83rd Infantry in Civil War), Hannah S (Anderson), Jacob W (29th Infantry Civil War), Jared Blakely (7th Calvary Civil War), Rhyneer Speer (7th Calvary Civil War), Charity E., Sarah Jane Campbell (married Benjamin Franklin Campbell in 1865), Harriet F. (married William H Campbell in LaPorte on Apr 9, 1869).
