Isaac was one of two sons born to John Oakes & his first wife, her name is unknown.

Isaac also lived in Orange Co. & Albemarle Co, VA. He moved his family to Oglethorpe Co, Georgia, in about 1790. "Brother Isaac & Sister Lucy" became members of Antioch Baptist Church in Stephen, Georgia, soon after it was organized. Isaac was excommunicated for the "sin of drunkeness".
He later moved his family to Perry Co, Alabama, where he made his first land purchase in 1821. Isaac & Lucy were part of a group of several families that left Antioch Baptist Church in about 1820 & settled in Perry Co. AL.

Isaac joined the Revolutionary Army at age 16. He guarded prisoners in Albemarle Co; was a private in the VA Militia from 1776-78. At age 74 he enrolled for his pension on 10/29/1833 in Perry Co, AL; at that time he was a widower & residing with his son, Isaac Oakes, Jr.
