Mrs. Ina Bagg Merrell, 86, widow of Eliphalet H. Merrell, one of the most prominent clubwomen in Syracuse at the turn of the century, and a descendant of one of the earliest families in Syracuse, died Tuesday after a lingering illness.
Mrs. Merrell was the president of the first Mothers' club in Syracuse and her name was associated with almost every women's activity in this city at the close of the last century and the beginning of the present.
She was the daughter of James L. and Mary B. Redfield Flagg (sic). Her father was a prominent attorney and was one of the most active promoters of the material welfare of Syracuse. He organized and created the Onondaga County Savings Bank, drew up its charter, and served as first vice president and attorney for the bank for 23 years. Her mother was the daughter of the late Lewis H. Redfield, pioneer Onondaga County printer and journalist, whose monument now stands at the entrance of Forman Park.
Julia Ward Howe, author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," was often a guest at the Bagg home, with whom Mr. and Mrs. Merrell lived, at what is now 502 James st.
Surviving are a son, Lawrence Merrell, and a grandson. Funeral services will be conducted at the rooms of Fairchild & Meech, Inc. at 11 a.m. Thursday, Rev. W. Waldemar W. Agrew, pastor of May Memorial Unitarian Church, will officiate and burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.
