Mellie was first married to Owen Tyler Walden Jun 17 1891 in IL. They had four children: Ira, Maude, Harry and Dora. The 1900 census, Dewitt IL, shows that she had 4 of 4 children living and had been married nine years. Dora was just a baby. It appears her husband left her and their four young children, soon after the census, as he married Mary Jane Harris in 1901.

Mellie remarried to Francis Marion Walden, her brother-in-law (brother of Owen Tyler Waldon), in 1904, and brought her four children to the marriage. Mellie and Francis Marion had three children, Thomas, Hattie and Emery. In 1910 they are in Polk Co MO. (as is her first husband and wife) with her four children from first marriage and three from her current marriage. She indicates she is in her 2nd marriage, husband in 1st, they had been married about six years and she had 7 of 7 children living.
