Peoria - Paul Lawrence Zumwalt, 92, of Peoria died at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 20, 2004, at the University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque, N.M.
Born April 4, 1912, in Emden, to Edwin and Clara Siuts Zumwalt, he married Lila Anna Birky on Oct. 22, 1939 in Hopedale. She died on Feb. 12, 2003, in Peoria.
He also was preceded in death by one brother.
Surviving are four sons, Glen (and Judy) of Fountain Green, Utah, Dr. Ross (and Dr. Cheryl Willman) of Albuquerque, Wayne (and Laura) of Colorado Springs, Co., and Dr. Merle (and Amy) of Battleground, Ind.; one daughter, Dr. Susan (and Dr. John) Gorz of Algoma, Wis.; 11 grandchildren; and three brothers, Robert (and Helen) of Emden, Delmar (and Martha) of Bloomington, and Dean (and Alice) of Peoria.
He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1938 with a degree in civil engineering. He worked for the U.S. Geological Survey making topographic maps.
A Navy veteran, he served in Korea as a military governor.
He became an engineer for the city of Peoria and later for Caterpillar Tractor Company, retiring in 1977.
He was an active member of the Highpointers Club, an organization of people who climb the highest point in each state. At the age of 85, he climbed Colorado's South Mount Elbert.
He wrote "Fifty State Summits," a collection of data for hikers and climbers.
He was elected to the Illinois Valley Striders Hall of Fame in 1981. He was a life member of the National Society of Professional Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Running and Fitness Association.
He was also a member of the Club of Retired Engineers and the Mazamas Mountain Climbing Club in Portland, Ore.
He was a member of the University United Methodist Church.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at his church, where the Rev. Robert Lawry will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Davison-Fulton Woodland Chapel in Peoria. Burial will be at Swan Lake Memory Gardens.
Memorials may be made to his church.
