Born June 5, 1914, in Delavan to Christian V. and Mary May Hieser Birky, she married Paul L. Zumwalt on Oct. 22, 1939, in rural Delavan. He survives.
Also surviving are four sons, Glen (and Judy) of Fountain Green, Utah, Dr. Ross (and Dr. Cheryl Willman) of Albuquerque, N.M., Wayne (and Laura) of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Dr. Merle (and Amy) of Battle Ground, Ind.; one daughter, Dr. Susan (and Dr. John) Gorz of Algoma, Wis.; three brothers, Marvin Birky of Delavan, Carrol Birky of Aurora, Colo., and Edgar Birky of Winter Haven, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
A 1938 graduate of Mennonite School of Nursing in Bloomington, she had been a registered nurse at Mennonite Hospital in Bloomington.
She was a member of University United Methodist Church for 56 years, where she had taught Sunday school and served on the board of trustees for many years. She also was a member of United Methodist Women, the Leah Circle, the Services Circle and King's Daughters & Sons.
She was past president of the Women's Society of Christian Service. She was a member of the Illinois Society of Professional Engineers Auxiliary. She was a 15-year member of the Highpointers Club.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at her church. The Rev. John McIntosh will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at DavisonFulton Woodland Chapel and 30 minutes before services at the church. Burial will be in Swan Lake Memory Gardens.
