Caroline Niernberger, 94, Hays, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at St. John's of Victoria Nursing Home, Victoria. She was born Sept. 14, 1916, in Ellis to John and Anna (Gaschler) Erbert.

She married Herbert Niernberger on June 2, 1936, in Ellis. He preceded her in death Jan. 13, 1998.

She was a homemaker and worked in retail for many years. She was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella, both of Hays.

Survivors include a daughter, Alice Phillips, Overland Park; a sister, Doris Westhusin, Victoria; two granddaughters, Julia Thomas, Lantana, Texas, and Jackie Lenhart, Macon, Ga.; four great-grandchildren; and a special friend, John Degenhardt, and his family, Hays.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Frank, and two sisters, Betty and Viola.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church; burial with graveside services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in St. Mary Cemetery, Ellis. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, both at Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 20th and Pine. A Daughters of Isabella rosary will be at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by a vigil at 6 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.
