John Dorsey Martin's namesake ancestor, Thomas Martin (1629-1701; born Park Pale, Dorsetshire, England), had immigrated from England to Talbot County, Maryland in 1663. His family lived on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, in and around Easton (officially established in 1710); but there are also records of various family members living in Anne Arundel, Frederick, Howard, and Queen Anne's counties of Maryland.

Records indicate Thomas' descendants migrated south through Virginia, North Carolina; and, ultimately, to Greene County, Georgia in about 1780. John Dorsey was born in Putnam County, Georgia. His family moved to Coosa County, Alabama in about 1836 when my great-great grandfather was seven years old.

John met Louisa "Epsy" Tansey Glenn and married her on September 22, 1850, in Coosa County. They would have ten children between 1851 and 1871, and all would be born on their family farm in the historical community of Jordan in the northwestern portion of Coosa County.
