Death of Mrs. Mary Jewett Mason

Waterville, Nov. 22 (Special) - Mary Jewett Mason, aged and highly respected resident of this village, died at the home of her brother, Charles A. Jewett, on Madison Street last evening at about 5 o'clock. Mrs. Mason was born in this town March 13, 1818. She was a daughter of Jonathan Jewett, formerly a prominent citizen of this town, of a family of eleven children, but one now survives, Charles A. Jewett.

Nearly all of her long life has been spent at the home of her brother, she having practically always resided with him except six years immediately following her marriage, during which time she resided at Vernon Center. After the death of her husband, which occurred some years ago, she came to Waterville and continued to make her home there until her death.

Mrs. Mason has been in poor health for quite a long time, but her wonderful vitality and strength permitted her to recover from her previous illnesses. She was taken seriously ill for the last time about three weeks since. She was a woman of strong mentally, as well as of Christian character, and enjoyed the esteem of a large circle of friends. She is survived by her brother Charles and by a large number of nephews and nieces, among whom are Charles H. Jewett and Mrs. Jay Hatheway, children of Lyman Jewett residing near here, Charles Mason, a nephew of Vernon and Dr. William E. Jewett of Adrian Mich. who was recently a guest here. Arrangements for the funeral have not as yet been fully completed, but it will be held Monday next, from the house of her brother.
