The daughter of Clarence Clark and Mary Jane (Dellinger) Buford, she was born near Downing, Missouri on April 10, 1907.
On July 5, 1926, she was united in marriage to Basil J. Zaerr in Bloomfield, Iowa.
To this union two sons were born, Jack Zaerr and B. J. Zaerr. Both preceded her in death. Besides her sons, she was preceded in death by her husband and her parents and two sisters, Ruby Jackson and Eva Norman. Also her only brother, Russell Buford.
Mr. and Mrs. Zaerr spent nearly all of their life in the Downing vicinity. For a time in the l960's, they owned and operated a locker plant in Gorin, Missouri. Cleo was a member of the Baptist Church of Downing, but for several years while still maintaining her own home, she worked in the Pentecostal Church in Memphis, Missouri teaching a Sunday School Class. She was a homemaker and a wonderful mother.
Surviving are a niece, who Cleo raised as a daughter, Roberta Small of Memphis, Missouri; her daughters in law, Patricia Zaerr of Le Claire, Iowa and Darlene Zaerr of Fort Madison, Iowa; two sisters, Clarice Ayer of Downing, Missouri and Nellie Murrell of Centerville, Iowa; four grandchildren, Christine, Timothy, Vicky and Tracy; several great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, September 21, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. at the Norman Funeral Home in Downing, Missouri. Officiating the services will be Reverend Leon Buford assisted by Reverend Sam Martin. Interment will be in the Downing City Cemetery at Downing, Missouri. Pallbearers will be Randy Small, Jesse Small, Dale Small, Jody Small, Bobby Small and John Small. Music will be provided by organist, Betty Anderson. Special selections will be "In The Garden" and "The Old Rugged Cross". A visitation for family and friends will be on Wednesday, September 20, 2000 until 8:00 p.m. A memorial has been established for the Downing City Cemetery.
