Clarice Ethel Ayer, 90, of rural Downing, MO, passed away February 13, 2002, at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO.
The daughter of Clarence Clark and Mary Jane (Dellinger) Buford, she was born February 18, 1911, in rural Downing, MO.
On November 25, 1933, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. O.L. Lasley, Clarice was united in marriage to Anthony Ayer. To this union four children were born Ronald Franklin, Vaughn Gail, Clarice Colleen and Anthony Don. Clarice and Anthony celebrated 62 years of marriage together.
Surviving Clarice are her children, Ronald and wife, Janet Ayer of LaHarpe, IL, Vaughn Ayer of Downing, MO, Colleen Branson of Holts Summit, MO and Don Ayer of Bettendorf, IA; two grandchildren, Daniel and wife, Lisa Ayer and Deborah and husband, Richard Winburn; six great-grandchildren, Tyler Ayer, Nathaniel Ayer, Brandon Ayer, Sarah Winburn, Andrew Winburn and Christopher Winburn; and one sister, Nellie Murrell of Cincinnati, IA.
Clarice is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Anthony on December 28, 1995; one son-in-law, Harry Branson; one brother, Russell Buford; and three sisters, Ruby Jackson, Cleo Zaerr, and Eva Norman.
Clarice graduated from the Downing High School with the class of 1930 and also attended Kirksville State Teachers College. Following her attendance at the teachers college, she then taught two years in the rural schools. Clarice was a faithful member of the Fabius Baptist Church, where one of her highlights of her life was teaching the Youth Sunday School class for a number of years at the little country church.
Funeral services were held February 16, 2002, at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, MO, with Bobby Beeler officiating. Maureen Watkins, organist and Doug Norman, soloist provided music. Pallbearers were Henry Norman, Danny Buford, Randall Ayer, Daniel Ayer, Carl Edward Gower and Tim Melvin. A memorial has been established for the Fabius Cemetery. Burial was in the Fabius Cemetery, east of Lancaster, MO. Norman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
