Ivan S. "Sam" Barclay
(January 10, 1924 - May 18, 2011)
Ivan S. "Sam" Barclay, Jr., of Elverson, died on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at Ephrata Manor Nursing Home, following an illness.
He was born January 10, 1924 in Honey Brook Township in the third floor bedroom in the house across the street from St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He was the son of the late Ivan S. Sr. and Lillie (Miller) Barclay. He was the husband of Sally G. (Chandler) Stacey Barclay with whom he shared 10 years of marriage.
His great grandfather Mordecai Barcley changed the spelling to Barclay. He was one of the first vestrymen at St. Mark's. One of his great uncles, John Barcley served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
At the age of 2, Ivan received the nickname of "Sam". He would often follow after a neighbor by the name of Sam Zook, so they called him little Sam. At the age of 5, his family moved to Glenmoore where he attended Wallace Township school grades 1-10. Since secondary school was optional he traveled to Downingtown High School for grades 11-12. He graduated in 1941. He hitchhiked to school every day and rode to school everyday with the milkman. While a junior he lost 6 friends in an automobile accident. Sam was the only one to survive the crash as he was thrown from the car.
After his graduation in 1941 Sam worked at the Downingtown Iron Works. He worked there 3 months and quit after a fatal accident at the plant that occurred not more than a few feet from him.
He then went to work at Devereaux Foundation as a House Father where he met his wife Dorothy Miller. They were married Sept. 3, 1949. They had one daughter, Ivanna B. who married William A. Freeman, Jr. and 3 grandchildren; Amanda husband of John Costanzo, Rebecca husband of Jamie Hartranft and William Samuel Freeman. He was great grandpa to 3 great grandchildren. Sam is also survived by a sister, Joanne Milies.
He worked at Devereaux until he was drafted into the Army during WWII. He served in the 348th Quartermaster Corps as a Tech 4 Sergeant. He was also temporarily assigned to the 101st Airborne and the British Army and parachuted into France on D-Day, June 6, 1944. After he landed a French Farmer hid him from the Germans until he could meet up with his troop. His division was involved with the liberation of Buchanvald Concentration Camp. During the war he served in England (where he learned to dislike Mutton), France, Germany and Denmark.
After the war he attended Drexel University under the GI bill. He graduated in 1948 with a degree in Economics. He completed a 4yr. College program in 2 yrs. He worked with the Retail Credit Co. (later called Equifax) as a Field Representative, Field Representative Supervisor, and Assistant Manager. He retired after 35 years with the business.
He enjoyed playing baseball. He played as catcher with Drexel and had a tryout with the Phillies while at Drexel. His tryout was with Chuck Conners (a pitcher) of "The Rifleman" TV series. Unfortunately, he did not get to play with the Phillies as they said that he was not big enough. He later played on the Glenmoore baseball team managed by his father. He could play any position and later became manager and during this time the team won league championships.
He also attended Philadelphia Seminary part time while working full time. He was 1 credit short of becoming an Episcopal Priest. He has been Lay Minister at St. Mark's since 1951. He has served under the following priests; Rev. Wilcox, Rev. Harris Baldwin, Rev. Frederick Brueininger, Rev. Joseph Lair, Rev. Marshall Bevins, Rev. John Kolb, Rev. Don Vandergrift, Rev. Wm. R. McKeane, Rev. W. Wm. Melnyk and Rev. Thomas Phumprey.
In 1966 when the Bishop was going to close St. Mark's, Sam along with Walter Blank to keep the church open for 1½ years until a minister could be found. During his years at St. Mark's, Sam has taught the Adult Sunday School Class, worked as the custodian by opening the doors each Sunday, posted the page numbers for hymns, assisted the Altar Guild members, acted as Supply Sergeant for the kitchen and was the best coffee maker making sure the coffee pot was peculating before church each Sunday. He also acted as Lay Pastoral Minister, a member of the Pastoral Committee and started up a food bank at the church to help others. He was always there to help others whenever he could.
He has 4 step children; Tom, Jill, Troy and Travis and 10 step grandchildren; Amber, Crystal, Troy, Ashlyn, J.P., Justine, Jared, Tisha, Travis and Mason and 1 step great grand child Sadie Lorah.
Sam was preceded in death by his 1st wife Dorothy E. (Miller) Barclay; 1 brother; Jay Barclay and a sister; Dorothy Emma Miller.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 23, 2001 at 11 AM from St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 1020 Chestnut Tree Road, Honey Brook, Pa. 19344., with the Rev Elizabeth Evans officiating. Interment will follow at the adjoining cemetery. A calling hour will be on Sunday from 6 to 8 PM from The Labs Funeral Home, Inc., 141 Pequea Ave. Honey Brook, Pa. and 1 hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions may be made in the memory of Sam to St. Mark's Episcopal Church at the above address or Aseracare Hospice, 315 Primrose Lane, # 101, Mountville, Pa. 17554.
