"Josiah Bond was a pioneer of Santa Cruz County, Arizona. Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin, Josiah graduated from the Colorado School of Mines and worked as a mining engineer in Mexico, before marrying and settling down in the little mining town of Alto, Arizona, in 1906. That year he built a modest adobe house, one room of which served as the official Alto Post Office from 1907 to 1933. Josiah's wife, Minnie, was postmaster and also a schoolteacher. After her tragic death by lightning in 1922, Josiah became the postmaster and schoolteacher. He was also a talented poet who wrote "Arizuma," a tale of the Conquistadors' search for a lost vein of ore. Josiah spent the remainder of his life in Alto raising children and never remarried. He was buried in the Alto Cemetery on September 12, 1938."
