Frank Fehr was born and raised, along with his younger sister and two younger brothers, in the North End and East Side neighborhoods of Saint Paul, Ramsey County, Minnesota, U.S.A. by his European immigrant parents and maternal grandparents. In 1917, though barely old enough, he left his job at Hamm's brewery to join the U.S. Army. His home address shown on his draft card was the same as Abel Swanson's(1) Paint and Musical Instrument Repair store(2), 853 Payne Avenue, across the street from today's popular East Side Bar (formerly "W6" Restaurant). The building that housed Swanson's store was lost to a multi-alarm fire in the 1970s. Just after the end of WWI, while 21-year old Frank was still serving in the U. S. Army, 303 Trench Mortar Btry., 78th Division in France, his father, John Fehr, passed away. A few years after the war ended, Frank moved east to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, a city he called home for the rest of his life. Whatever compelled him to change his last name around the time he left Minnesota in the mid to late 1920s remains a mystery apparently passed down to few if any younger Fehr generations.
