William M. Boatner was son of John & Martha Brooks Boatner who were married in June or July of 1870, Gilmer Co GA. The 1880 census indicates that John Boatner died of diabetes in March of that year. His widow, Martha (age 27), and their four children are living with her parents, Green Berry & Melissa Brooks (ages 60 & 65, respectively). The Boatner children were: William, 8; Arkey M. (dau), 6; Rebecca J. (Janey), 3; and Green Berry, 1. Another child, George W. Boatner, age 10, is listed; however, it is believed the census-taker made an error & this was probably a Brooks grandchild. No further record of Martha Brooks Boatner was found in Gilmer Co.

Boatner family history indicates that at some point the four children were separated - the girls went to live with relatives somewhere south of Atlanta; the boys remained with relatives in the Gilmer Co area (perhaps with their uncle Martin Burch Boatner). One source indicated the four siblings were eventually reunited after approximately 50 years!

Also, a Brooks relative found a Martha Boatner living in Oconee Co, SC in 1900, but was unable to determine if that was Martha Brooks Boatner.
