Born in Norwich in April of 1926, Jean was the daughter of Leland and Olive (Salisbury) Brookins. As a child she attended grade school at Chenango Lake, and later graduated from the Norwich High School. Jean and John L. Button were married in Norwich on June 2, 1945. Prior to her marriage, she was first employed in Norwich with Judge William Bonney, followed by the years she worked as a secretary in the South New Berlin school system. Jean was also employed by Victory Markets as an administrative assistant. She was a long-time member of the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church of South New Berlin, which was very important to her, and belonged to the St. Matthew's Episcopal Church Women. Jean enjoyed crossword puzzles and she and John loved to travel and take bus trips.
Jean is survived by her children and their families: Nancy J. Kellogg and husband John of Canandaigua and son Matthew; John W. Button and wife Peggy of Tupper Lake and children Capt. Kyle Button and wife Ashley, and Adam and Lindsay Button; Steven L. Button and wife Charlene of South New Berlin, and children Jennifer, Stephanie and Heidi; and Paul A. Button and wife Linda of South New Berlin and daughter Amanda. She is also survived by her sister, Martha Alessi of Virginia; sisters-in-law Ruth McGuire and Vera Button of Norwich; and nieces, nephews and cousins. Jean was predeceased by her husband, John, on April 2, 1996; by her sister Helen Brown; and brothers William, Louis and Albert Brookins.
