George A. Sperling Sr.,
former city fire chief

LONG BRANCH -
George A. Sperling, a former chief of the city's fire department, died yesterday at Monmouth Medical Center, here. He was 83 and resided at 615 Wall St.
He served as fire chief here during 1935. Mr. Sperling was born in New Brunswick and lived here for most of his life. He retired in 1966 as a plumber steamfitter. He was
an Army veteran of World War I. He was a member of the Elberon Engine Company, and a 59-year member of Local V, Plumbers and Steamfitters Union, Tinton Falls. His wife, the former Alta Van Dyke, died In 1977.Surviving are two sons, Thomas J. Sperling, here, and George A. Sperling Jr. of Oceanport; two sisters, Mrs. Alice Walling of Longwood, Fla , and Mrs. Clason Moller here; and six grandchildren. The Woolley Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Frank L. Clayton, Jr., was elected chief of the Long Branch fire department last week. He will succeed George Van Winkle, Jr. George
Sperling was elected 1st assistant chief and Allen Griffin defeated W.
Stanley West for second assistant chief.
