Nicholas was born to George Trobaugh and Barbara Hafner. He wed Mary "Magdalena" Krouse in Greene County, Tennessee on October 6, 1831. They had:

The family shows in the 1850 and 1860 Clinton County, Indiana census. In 1861, they moved to Russiaville, Howard County, Indiana. Son George died there on December 20, 1861; son James died there on February 26, 1862; and wife Magdalena died there on September 25, 1863 and all three are buried in Russiaville Cemetery.

Nicholas wed Elizabeth Taylor in Howard County on January 31, 1869. Son William died on December 8, 1876, and Nicholas died on May 26, 1887; both are buried in Russiaville Cemetery.
