He was born on May 19, 1932 in, Edna, Texas to Laffie Riley Gregory and Mary Lou Reynolds Gregory.
After graduating from Tarkington High School in 1951, he began working for Hughes Tool Company in Houston, Texas. James began a long career in the oil industry in 1958 when he went to work for NL Baroid. In 1969 he became employed by Dresser Magcobar, after eleven years with Dresser Magcobar, he went to work for The Drlgmud Company in 1980. In 1997 he and his son, Johnny, began their own company, Gregory Drilling Fluid, Inc., for which he served as President until his retirement in 2010.
James was an avid hunter, making many trips to Colorado hunting deer and elk, and to South Texas bird hunting, with his sons, family and friends. When not working at his job, he was "working" at the farms, first in Madisonville, Texas and then in Shiro, Texas. James was a Christian man, and was a long-standing member of First Assembly of God in Huntsville, Texas.
James was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Claude Lee Gregory.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years June Page Gregory; daughter, Gerrie Lynn Gregory Scott; son, James Edward Gregory, Jr.; son and daughter-in-law, Johnny Gregory and Jeri Jo Gregory; one granddaughter; one grandson; brother, Dalton Gregory and wife Betty; sister, Alice Justice and husband Bill.
