Son of Aaron Barrier & Susan Chrisman, Husband of 1st Wife, Permelia Ann Lovall & 2nd Wife, Phebe Jane Dolen date of marriage July 12, 1897; father of at least the following children and probably more; the children of Permeleann - James S, Smith, John F, and Isaac, Sarah Margaret, Malinda, Celina Jane and Sousanna.

Volunteering as a Union Soldier, Richard and his younger brothers Smith and Isaac, enrolled at Camp Burnside, Kentucky on November 5, 1863 and joined the Thirtieth Kentucky Volunteer Mounted Infantry , Company C - Attached to 4th Brigade, 1st Division, District of Kentucky, 5th Division, 23rd Army Corps, Dept. of the Ohio, to August, 1864; 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, District of Kentucky, Dept. of Ohio; mustered out August 24, 1865 at Lexington, Kentucky.

As a private he participated in action at Lexington, Cynthiana, Laurel Creek Gap and Clinch Mountain, Saltsville, Virginia, Kingsport, Tennessee and other battles. His Regiment lost 2 Officers and 21 enlisted men to battle and 71 to disease. He mustered out, August 24, 1865 at Lexington Kentucky.

He and Jane lived in Parmleysville, Wayne County, Kentucky until his death.
His tombstone is inscribed Richard Byers .
