George Street Taylor, 78, of Mercer, TN died this morning in the Haywood County Hospital in Brownsville, after an illness of one week.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 PM at the Beech Grove Baptist Church, conducted by Rev A L Bishop, Rev Ronnie Teague, and Rev Orville Butler. Burial will follow in Maple Springs Cemetery near Mercer.
Mr. Taylor was born Dec 20, 1878 in Mercer to the late Robert Wooding and Mary Ellen Pentecost Taylor. He had lived on the farm that had been purchased by his grandparents, his entire life.
He was a charter member of the Beech Grove Baptist Church, a former Sunday School superintendent and was chairman of the board of deacons.
He was married on Dec 20, 1903, in Madison County, to the former Ruth Derryberry of Magee, MS, who survives him. Mr. Taylor is also survived by five sons; W.E. Taylor, E.V. Taylor, George Festus Taylor and Clyde W. Taylor, all of Memphis; and John R. Taylor of Dallas, TX. Also surviving are three daughters; Mrs. Ollie Yelverton of Paducah, KY; Mrs. W.J. Pope of Bruceton and Mrs. A.O. Melvin of Memphis; a brother, W.O. Taylor of Madison Hall, a sister, Mrs. Sallie Perry of Lexington; 18 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be Cecil and Bobby Pope, LaVoyd, Ronnie and Donnie Taylor and Charles Payne.
Honorary pallbearers will be Turner Petty, Ivy Leathers and Vester, Houston, Hudson and Luther Taylor.
Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
