Ames--Leona M. Baker, 96, of Ames, died Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Her funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Ames, the Rev. Larry LaVelle and the Rev. Larry Vallery officiating. The family will greet visitors 9-11 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial at Forest Cemetery, Oskaloosa. Adams Funeral Home in Ames is in charge of arrangements. Memorials to Israel Family Hospice House of Ames or First United Methodist Church.
Leona M. Baker was born July 4, 1905, near What Cheer to Clarence E. and Iva Maude Pence McMullen. She was raised in Delta, and graduated Delta High School in 1923. She attended business school in Oskaloosa. She was chief cook for Cedar Consolidated Schools near Oskaloosa until 1951. She married Howard Dixon Baker on Sept. 10, 1923, in Chariton. She was a member of the Christian Church while in Oskaloosa and later joined First United Methodist Church in Ames. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and I.E.W. She had lived in Ames since May 1978.
She is survived by two daughters-in-law: Frances Baker Carroll and Kathleen Baker; six grandchildren: Gail Hansen , Steven Baker, Julie Taylor, Diane Carroll, Joyce Baker and Russell Baker; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard D. Baker, on Sept. 23, 1977; two sons, Howard D. Baker Jr. on May 15, 1978 and C. Gilbert Baker on April 18, 1987; her parents; three sisters: Lillie Toyne, Letha Heston and Ruth Shearer; a brother, Glen McMullen; and one granddaughter.
