Death of Mr. Wm. Kirby After combatting for over a year the disease which finally proved fatal--a naturally rugged constitution permitting him to bear up surprisingly under the disabilities of old age and sickness--William Kirby, the noted journalist, novelist and poet, passed away peacefully here on Saturday in the 89th year of his age. He is survived by a son, John Kirby, two grandsons and a granddaughter of Toronto and by a grandson, Eric Kirby in England. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon from his late residence to St. Mark's Cemetery.

Whatever Canadian novelists may do to enrich the writing of fiction in Canada, for the future, there can be no question that when William Kirby wrote "The Golden Dog," he made for Canadian romatic fiction an honorable and memorable beginning.

It was the great achievement of his life, which was a long, happy, and useful one; and his former fellow citizens may feel sure that to be remembered as one who gave an early and lasting impulse in the direction of making Canadian literature pure, elevated and ennobling, was Mr. Kirby's final and most satisfying choice at the end of his life.

---
William Kirby and Eliza Magdalene Whitmore had three sons as follows:
William Whitmore Kirby (1848-1849), Eugene Guilford Kirby (1851-1893) and John Colborne Kirby (1854-1918).
