Baltzer Barton was born February 17, 1824, and reared on his father's farm. In 1849 he removed to Westmoreland county, and one year later engaged in the mercantile business. In 1854 he returned to Fulton county and engaged in farming, which occupation he followed until 1883, when he removed to Bedford, Pennsylvania.
While living in Fulton county, Mr. Barton was among its prominent residents and progressive farmers. He held the office of county commissioner over three years, also the various township offices, and has greatly interested himself in the cause of education.
October 15, 1850, he married Nancy J. Chilcote, whose ancestors came from England at an early day, and settled on a farm in Massachusetts, where Boston is now located. From there they moved to Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Barton have been blessed with ten children: Joseph F., George, Elijah, Humphrey, William, John, Rebecca, Malinda, Albert and Adda.

On October 1, 1851, Baltzer Barton married Nancy Jane Chilcote who was born on June 16, 1828, per her tombstone. They had the following children:

Elijah Barton b: 25 MAY 1855 in Fulton Co. PA, was an attorney in Minneapolis, MN., he married Ella Louise Austin
Humphrey Barton b: 6 MAY 1857 in Fulton Co. PA, was an attorney in St. Paul, MN.
William P. Barton b: OCT 1859, who was Secretary Board of Charities and Corrections and Superintendent of the Poor, Minneapolis, MN.
John C. Barton b: FEB 1861, who was a household decorator and furnisher at Seattle, WA.
Rebecca I. Barton b: APR 1862, wife of William Bohn, of North Yakima, WA.
Malinda Barton b: ABT 1866, was the wife of W. B. Watt, of North Yakima, WA.
Albert C. Barton b: ABT 1868, who was assistant manager of the Northland Pine Co. and Mississippi and Rum River Boom Co., at Minneapolis, MN.
Adda C. Barton b: ABT 1871, who married W. B. Dudley, of North Yakima, WA.
