Of Fredericksburg Texas

He was born in 1833 in the Duchy of Nassau, Germany. The family came to Texas on the ship Johann Dethardt in December 1845.
Known siblings:
Charlotte
Jacob
Wilhelmine
William
Julianne
Henriette

August became a farmer and married Henriette Bertha Goebel 26 Sept 1858 in Gillespie County, Texas. They had two sons (Ferdinand and ?).
Ferdinand's tombstone and death certificate list his DOB as 1 Dec 1861. However, it must be 1 Dec 1859 because he appears on the July 1860 census with his parents.

August was said to be one of the leaders of the "Luckenbach Bushwhackers". He survived the Nueces River Battle, but was captured (by the same Confederate detachment that captured Herman Flick) on August 20, 1862 about eight miles north of San Antonio and was hanged, probably at the same time as Herman Flick. August's widow remarried on 3 Jan 1865 to Michael Tatsch in Gillespie County.

In 1860 August and his siblings (William, Jacob, and Julianne) and their families were all living near each other in Grape Creek, Gillespie County, Texas.
His mother Anna Elise Luckenbach is living in the home of his sister Julianne Diehl. His sister Henriette Meckel is living in nearby Fredericksburg.

His brother William Luckenbach married Katharina Kallenberg, sister of John George Kallenberg who was killed at the Nueces River battle.

Information on his brother Jacob Luckenbach can be found at the Handbook of Texas online.
