He was born about 1840 in Emmerichenhain, Germany to Adolph Wilhelm Flick (1812-1846) and Johannette Margarethe Knaup Flick (16 Nov 1809 -1857). Her parents were Johann Daniel Knaup and Sophie Margarethe Flick Knaup.

Herman's known siblings were:
Henrietta b. 1837
Louise b. 8 nov 1840- 1927, m. 16 jul 1858 Fredericksburg, Gillespie County, Tx to Johann Schuessler
Pauline b. 1844

The family arrived in Texas on board the ship "Washington" in 1845. His father died in 1846 and his mother remarried to Johann Caspar Danz in 1848 and had 3 more children. Herman and his siblings were living with their mother and step father in Fredericksburg, Texas in 1850. His mother died in childbirth in 1857. His step father remarried in Gillespie County on 1 July 1858 to Dorothea Bock, a sister to Conrad Bock, below.
24 Sept 1858 Daniel Weiershausen was appointed as guardian of the minor children of Johannette. (Daniel's son, Heinrich Weyershausen was married to Henrietta Flick and was killed at the Nueces Battle).

In 1860, Herman Flick was a single farmer living in Gillespie County near his sisters: Pauline Flick Bock (the wife of Conrad Bock who was also hanged) and his sister Henriette Flick Weyershausen (the wife of Heinrich Weyershausen who was killed at the Nueces River Battle). These three families were all living next door to each other in the 1860 census of Gillespie County, post office Caldwellshill.

Herman survived the Nueces River Battle but was captured by a Confederate detachment near Medio Creek, an intermittent stream in Medina County. He was hanged, probably on 20 August 1862.
