Paul the son of Max Stein and Elizabeth J. Stein, the brother of Jeffery M. Stein of Oak Park IL, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on February 27 1968, in Chicago IL. He arrived in Vietnam on August 2, 1968 and was assigned for duty with Company E, BLT 2/7, 9th MAB FMF.

With the first days heavy confrontation with the NVA on Operation MEADE RIVER the Marines of the 2d Battalion pressed on with their attack on the attack. Moving south toward the La Huan village complex, Company E crossing a river were hit with heavy, accurate rifle and automatic weapons fire by enemy snipers as the Marines emerged from a treeline and reached the northern bank of the La Tho River. Within several minutes the Company had several men dead and a number were wounded, in open rice fields and under extremely accurate fire the Company had to fall back and take up defensive positions on the northern bank. Supporting arms against the enemy positions was requested but strikes on enemy targets weren't carried out until the Marines who volunteered crossed back to the southern side of the river under enemy fire and recovered some of the casualties who were not able withdraw and needed assistance. The second assault into "Horseshoe" cost five Marines and one Navy Corpsman their lives, twenty six additional men were wounded, one who would later die of his wounds in November.

PFC Stein was one of the casualties, he was killed in action as a result of hostile rifle fire.

* PFC Stein was presented the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" posthumously "For heroic achievement ..on 22 November 1968."
