US Congressman, US Ambassador. A member of the Republican Party, he served Kansas' 2nd and 3rd District in the US House of Representatives (1961 to 1967). He served with the US Navy during World War II and upon returning home he received his BA from the University of Kansas. He attained his law degree from the University of Michigan in 1949 and commenced practicing privately following his service with the US Navy during the Korean War. After leaving Congress, Ellsworth served as a special assistant to President Nixon and was appointed to represent the US as Ambassador to NATO (1969 to 1971). He later served as Assistant Secretary of State (1974 to 1975) and was promoted to Deputy Secretary of Defense by President Ford (1975 to 1977). He died from complications of pneumonia and organ failure.
