Fred Ellsworth Dead At 69

Monday, Jan. 11 --

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) -- Fred Ellsworth, retired secretary of the University of Kansas Alumni Association, died today. He was 69.

Ellsworth, father of Rep. Robert F. Ellsworth, R-Kan., entered the University of Kansas Medical Center a week ago and underwent minor surgery Thursday. Attendants said complications developed.

Ellsworth, affectionately known as Mr. K.U., was secretary of the alumni association for 39 years, until his retirement in 1963.

Since then he had been counsel to the university for its forthcoming centennial observance and had devoted some time to writing historical articles.

Dormitory Named For Him
The university's largest dormitory is named in honor of Ellsworth, who was a member of the K. U. class of 1922.

Besides the son, Robert, he is survived by his widow, and another son, Stephen, of New York.

When Ellsworth became secretary of the alumni association, the university had fewer than 4,000 students and fewer than 10,000 alumni.

When he retired, the university's enrollment was more than 11,000, it had graduated some 50,000 persons and had added more than a dozen major buildings on its expanded campus. The alumni association had 16,499 members, one-third of them signed up for life, an operating budget of $110,000 and assets of $178,000.

His achievements include building of the World War II Memorial Campanile and Drive, the collection of pledges that helped build the World War I memorials, the Kansas Union and the stadium, the development of the Alumni Magazine into an award-winning monthly publication and the development of commencement reunions into meetings that thousands of alumni anticipate each year.
