James Henry Dodd was so taken with the lovely Catherine Lavenia Smith of Waterfall, Virginia, that he sold his general store in Tennessee and settled in Virginia. But Catherine's father would not bless the union until James had proved himself to be worthy. So he built Dodd's Mill and served the inhabitants of nearly the entire area from Culpepper to Manassas to Shenandoah. He finally married Catherine when she was 23, the day before the Civil War began in South Carolina. They made their home on 268 acres of the Payne/Smith plantation in Waterfall, Virginia, and he built her a lovely home which they named Poplar Hill. Together they had seven children, six of which were girls. One of those daughters was Laura Lee Dodd who married Percy Coleman Bowen of Hyattsville, Maryland.
