Laura Lee Dodd was born in Waterfall, Virginia in the throws of the Civil War which was raging in Manassas. Her family lived in the only historic house still remaining -- Poplar Hill --, built by her father who also owned the grist mill (Dodd's Mill) which is no longer standing. When she was born, Union soldiers had already taken over the family home, the family business, and turned beautiful Waterfall into a battleground. But she survived it all, and after the war was over her family worked hard to rebuild their lives. She developed into a lovely young woman, and married Percy Colman Bowen of Hyattsville, Maryland. They had five children: Lottie Bowen (Mathias), James Harrison (Harry) Bowen, Percy Prettyman Bowen, Rosalie Bowen (McCullough), and Allan S. Bowen.
